Your Hair Looks Great. Really. Now Hit RECORD

July 13, 20267 min read

Last week, we talked about courage. This week, it's time to use it.

I've noticed something after coaching hundreds of business owners. They'll spend three hours researching how to make a video, comparing microphones, watching YouTube tutorials, and reorganizing their office before they'll spend thirty seconds pressing Record.

That isn't preparation. It's avoidance. You're way overthinking this.

Learning the basics is smart. I want you to know where the Record button is, how to trim a clip, and how to add captions. A little competence keeps you from feeling completely lost. But there comes a point where another tutorial isn't helping anymore. It's simply giving you permission to delay the uncomfortable part.

You don't need another tip. You need another take.

Just fricking hit Record.

☕ Why Do We Keep Rehearsing Instead of Recording?

I've seen this movie a hundred times. You stand in front of the mirror fixing your hair. You decide it's not quite right. Then you say something to yourself that you'd never say to another human being.

You finally press Record.

"Hey, y'all..."

Nope. Delete. Record again. Watch it back. Cringe.

Throw your phone onto the couch ( because phones are expensive).

Back to the mirror. Maybe a little more blush. Maybe a little lip gloss. Maybe if your hair cooperates this time you'll magically become confident.

Spoiler alert... you won't.

So now you start messing with the ring light because clearly that's the problem. Never mind that standing in front of a window gives you beautiful light for free. Then you hold your phone up as high as your bangs from the '80s because somebody on the internet said it was more flattering.

It isn't.

Nobody has ever said, "I would've hired her, but her ring light wasn't bright enough."

Meanwhile, your future customer couldn't care less. They just wanted the answer to the question they typed into Google (well, probably ChatGPT).

Whereas, the business owner who looked into the little camera lens like they were talking to a friend over coffee, answered one question in under sixty seconds, and hit "Post" has already won. They're already collecting evidence of what's working for them. They're already building confidence while you're still negotiating with your reflection.

☕ What's the Simplest Way to Record a Video?

Stop trying to make a commercial.

You're talking to one person, not performing for an audience. Look at the little camera lens like your favorite client is sitting across the coffee shop from you. Start with a hook, answer the hook, and keep it under sixty seconds. Don't read a script. Just have the conversation the way you'd have it in real life.

Here's all you actually have to do:

(We're totally going to learn to edit and put the captions on and a title, but if you're ok with it, just post this fricking video! Otherwise, do everything up through Step 5.)

☕ What Happens When You Lose Your Train of Thought?

This is where almost everyone makes the same mistake. They forget what they were going to say ...and immediately hit Stop.

Don't.

Instead, pause. Think. Take a sip of coffee if you need to. Then keep talking.

A five-second pause is nothing. Your editing software can remove it in nanoseconds. Restarting the entire video every time you lose your train of thought only teaches your brain that mistakes aren't allowed.

They are. Editing exists for a reason.

☕ Why Am I Always Telling You to Use Edits?

Because your first editing software shouldn't require a college course.

However, if you can happy click around to edit on your own already, then do it. Otherwise, wait until next week after you've recorded 10 practice videos.

If you already have an Instagram account, download Edits. Record your video, trim the beginning and end, split the clip if you need to, add captions, put a title on the screen, and export it. That's more than enough to create professional-looking content without spending a fortune on software.

Remember, you're not trying to become a video editor. You're trying to become someone who presses Record without talking themselves out of it.

☕ Beginner Brew: What's the Goal of Your First Video?

Your first video has one job. It isn't to go viral. It isn't to impress strangers. It isn't even to get clients.

Its job is to prove that you're capable of pressing Record and surviving the experience. That's how confidence starts brewing.

☕ Ready to Brew?

Reading this blog won't make you better on camera, but recording your first video will.

If you'd like help polishing that first video, book your complimentary 30-minute editing session and we'll edit it together.

Or, if accountability is what you've been missing, join Video Hustle Hour on Thursdays at 9:00 PM ET. (First one is free.) I'll give you the prompt (hook) and four minutes to record. Then we'll give it feedback, tweak it, and move on before your inner critic has time to call another emergency meeting.

Because your business doesn't need another business owner who's preparing to make videos. It needs one who's making them.

☕ What should my first video I post be?

Here's the hook and content I want you to use for your first video that you will post:

I may be nervous, but I’m more committed than afraid. So, tell me how I did in the comments.

I’m [your name] with [brand].

I work with [niche] who are tired of [common frustration] and ready for [desired outcome].

☕ Hooks you can use in your first videos

There are a lot of hooks here. Read through them for inspiration and mindset. There will be at least 5 that resonate with you, so start with those. Next week, we'll focus on editing.
