Stop Waiting for Confidence to Finish Brewing

July 06, 20267 min read

I hear it almost every week. "I just need to feel more confident."

Business owners have been given terrible advice about confidence. Some people tell you to "just do it." Others tell you to wait until you feel ready. Neither one is particularly helpful.

If you've never recorded a video or written a social media post, a little knowledge keeps you from feeling completely lost. That's called competence, and it's worth building. Keep reading for tips on content, whether beginner or intermediate. And the list of HOOKS at the end is GOLD.

But competence isn't confidence. One teaches you what to do. The other comes because you did it. The mistake is waiting for confidence before you're willing to build either one.

☕ Why Are You Waiting for Confidence to Do Courage's Job?

Somewhere along the way, confidence got promoted to a job it was never qualified for.

Think about the things you've been postponing. Recording a video. Raising your prices. Walking into a networking event. None of those things require confidence to begin. They require courage to take the first step.

Confidence doesn't open doors. It walks through doors that courage already opened.

☕ What If You're Asking the Wrong Question?

Instead of asking yourself, "Am I ready?" ask a better question. "Am I willing?"

Are you willing to look a little awkward while you learn? Are you willing to record Version 1 knowing it won't look anything like Version 100?

Ready is a feeling. Willing is a decision. Businesses don't grow because people feel ready. They grow because someone decided to go anyway.

☕ Where Does Real Confidence Actually Come From?

Confidence isn't something you find. It's something you collect.

Every video you record is evidence. Every networking conversation is evidence. Every client you help is evidence that you know more than you think you do.

That's why confidence feels so elusive when you're standing still. You aren't building confidence. You're building evidence.

☕ Why Does Knowledge Still Matter?

Courage gets you started. Knowledge keeps you from feeling lost.

Those are two different jobs, and confusing them is why so many business owners stay stuck. A little competence gives you enough footing to take the first step. Confidence grows because you keep taking the next one.

That's why I still teach strategy. Knowing what to post, how to structure a Reel, or where to put your hook doesn't replace courage. It simply removes unnecessary friction.

So, here are two new sections for the blog meant for those starting and those who have some experience and want to level up.

☕ Beginner Brew: How Can Beginners Stop Posting and Start Structuring Their Content?

Posting randomly just to post isn't the goal anymore. Keeping people reading is.

If you're just getting started, focus on three simple shifts.

  • Lead with your strongest line. Skip "Happy Monday!" and earn the "...more" click with a question or bold statement. Make sure your first words last 2.5 lines so the "See more..." shows up.

  • Use a plain-text story once in a while. It pains me to say it because I love Canva, but a well-written text-only story can disrupt the newsfeed because it looks different from everything else. Don't overdo it. Think one story for every twenty posts.

  • Invite a conversation. "Link in bio" ends the interaction. A thoughtful question starts one. That's the key to engagement and growing your visibility. Ask your readers a question that they'll want to answer. My fave is "Dunkin' or Starbucks?"

☕ Intermediate Espresso Shot: How Can Experienced Creators Stay Ahead?

If you've been creating content for a while, your audience isn't the only one reading it anymore.

Ai is.

Make your content easy to understand by using clear headings, bullet points when they help, and natural language that actually sounds like you. If your caption reads like ChatGPT wrote it, rewrite it until it sounds like a conversation you'd have over coffee.

And stop trying to cram every lesson into one post. Great content leaves people wanting the next cup. That will poise you to create the mini dramas and sequential content that is gaining in popularity right now.

☕ What Happens When You Stop Waiting for Confidence?

Confidence has terrible timing. If you wait for it before you act, you'll be waiting a long time. If you decide you're willing to learn, willing to improve, and willing to look imperfect for a little while, confidence eventually catches up. It has no choice.

Confidence has never been the first ingredient. You brew it one courageous decision at a time. ☕
