Brewing Your Brand Voice: The First Sip
Most business owners think finding their brand voice is like ordering a complicated drink at a coffee shop.
They assume there’s a secret recipe.
A perfect formula.
Some kind of marketing magic.
But here’s the truth:
Your brand voice isn’t something you invent. It’s something you brew. And the beans are already in your cup.
Your brand voice lives in the way you talk about your work every day — the things you explain to customers, the problems you solve, and the beliefs you carry about your industry.
When we start working together on this inside the Brew Your Brand Voice framework, most people discover something surprising:
They already have a voice. They’ve just never slowed down long enough to listen to it. Or they've stifled it to be "nice."
Think about the conversations you have with customers. Those moments are where your voice is already brewing.
It shows up in:
• the things you wish people understood about your industry
• the questions you answer over and over
• the frustrations you feel when people misunderstand what you do
• the problems you genuinely love solving
☕ Your Brand Voice Isn’t Always Sweet
When people start thinking about their brand voice, they often imagine they need to sound:
pleasant
perky
pretty and polished
perfectly positive
Like the marketing version of a perfectly foamed latte.
But real conversations over coffee aren’t like that.
Sometimes they’re thoughtful.
Sometimes they’re passionate.
Sometimes they include a little eye roll.
And that’s okay.
Your brand voice isn’t just revealed through the things you enjoy explaining. It also shows up in the moments that make you sigh, shake your head, or think:
“Why do people keep doing it this way?”
Those reactions matter.
Because the things that frustrate you often reveal the beliefs that drive your work.
☕ Pay Attention to the Moments That Get a Reaction
Think about situations in your business that spark an emotional response.
For example:
How do you feel about meetings that could have been an email?
How do you feel when someone ignores the advice you know would help them?
How do you feel when someone talks over you or dismisses your expertise?
Those reactions aren’t weaknesses in your voice. They’re ingredients.
A little impatience, a touch of exasperation, or a moment of honest frustration can add depth to your content the same way a little coarse salt adds richness to coffee.
When shared thoughtfully, those moments tell your audience something important:
You care.
You’ve seen the problem.
And you’re not afraid to say what needs to be said.
☕ Authentic Voices Have Flavor
The goal isn’t to turn your content into a rant. The goal is to stay true to yourself. That means honoring the full range of what you feel about your work:
the excitement
the curiosity
the determination
and yes, sometimes the impatience
Because when people read your content and recognize a genuine reaction, they don’t think:
“That’s unprofessional.”
They think:
“That sounds real.”
And real voices are the ones people remember.
☕ Beginning to Emerge
Your voice also lives in the way you explain things.
Some people naturally sound like a teacher, breaking things down step-by-step.
Others show up like a coach, encouraging people to take action.
Some people are guides, calming nerves and walking people through the process.
None of these voices are wrong. They’re just different flavors of coffee.
And just like coffee, the flavor is already there — it simply needs the right brew method to bring it out.
One of my favorite ways to start uncovering someone’s voice is to imagine sitting in a coffee shop.
No sales pitch. No polished speech. Just a relaxed conversation.
If someone asked you:
“So what do you do?”
What would you say?
Not the version on your website. The version you’d say with a warm mug in your hand.
That’s where your voice starts showing up.
Another place your voice reveals itself is in your industry rants. Every business owner has them. Those moments where you think:
“Why does everyone keep saying that?”
“People make this way too complicated.”
“That’s not how this actually works.”
Those little rants often hold your strongest beliefs — and beliefs are a huge part of brand voice.
The same thing happens when you think about the transformation your clients experience. Before working with you, they might feel confused, overwhelmed, or stuck. After working with you, they feel confident, clear, and moving forward.
The way you talk about that transformation is another clue to your voice.
You may not realize it yet, but your voice is already sitting there like a fresh pot of coffee.
All it needs is the right questions to bring the flavor out.
And that’s exactly what we do inside the Brew Your Brand Voice exercises — we take what’s already brewing in your brain and turn it into content that actually sounds like you.
Because when your voice shows up clearly online, something powerful happens.
People recognize it. They trust it. And they start listening.
☕ Pro Tip
Your brand voice often shows up in the first sentence that comes to mind before you start editing yourself.
That first thought — the one you almost delete — is usually where the real flavor of your voice lives.
